EDT 5410: Week Six Reflections (R/D10)

For your reading reflection, since you have now read for the past few weeks about instructional design/technology in three different contexts (business, P-12, & High Ed), identify 2 or 3 significant themes or differences you have noticed across these contexts and describe them. Is there a particular area or way that you believe your current professional working environment could learn from the other contexts described in these chapters?

When it comes to instructional design and technology all three areas business, P-12, and higher education all have the same systematic approach to it. The model of accomplishing tasks is basically the same between the three areas. Where they differ is the outcome. Businesses ultimately want to profit from the change, P-12 wants to benefit the students and higher ed wants the student to benefit but also needs to profit in order to operate on a day to day basis.

I don't feel in my current work environment that we could learn a whole lot from the other contexts except for in Chapter 14. The recognition of employees through praise may help out employee morale and in turn help in the retention of students.

I agree that employees work harder when they feel valued. Recognition is a key piece in keeping employee morale high.

Positive Behavior Support is a big thing in education right now. Studies are showing that students are more likely to change behavior when praised for all the right things they do rather than being affraid of punishment. Employee recognition is right along the same concept.

I also agree designing in the three areas are all systematic. This seems to be true in any area of design that I know of though.

Melissa,

I agree that the three areas have a systematic approach. But I never really thought about it until you brought it up. I guess that they try one thing and if that doesn't work then something else. If one piece isn't working, then they decide to switch it for a different one etc.

What I was surprised about was that you stated that business profits, p-12 does it for the students and higher ed. does it for the students and also profits.

I would argue that p-12 sometimes does it for funding and not just for students and that higher ed. does it to get more students, so that it can profit.

In reference to employees; believe me when I say that I definitely believe that recognition is key and not just recognition, but a sincere appreciation and understanding of what it takes to do what the employees do.
